Proposal

Digital Media Proposal

Group Proposal

Narrative is something that is seen as normality to life, through stories, films, plays, texts and poems. It is built upon the expectation of an on going flow of ideas that comply to the structure of a beginning middle and end. (fisher and ariteole)

Our first idea was to choose a poem on which we can base our project, but we then thought about choosing some quotes from a book called Star Girl – Jerry Spinelli (2000) but realized it would be hard to keep a structure in this way so we both agreed on a poem that is written by Dereck Walcott (2004) as cited in the AQA Anthology. This is a poem that highlights heartbreak, not just the pain but also finding yourself at the other side and learning to realize that dwelling on the past will only bring you pain. The author is also trying to convey that the best way to find happiness again is to find it from inside your own heart and not to rely on others.

Love after Love – Dereck Walcott

The time will come

when, with elation

you will greet yourself arriving

at your own door, in your own mirror

and each will smile at the other's welcome,

and say, sit here. Eat.

You will love again the stranger who was your self.

Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart

to itself, to the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored

for another, who knows you by heart.

Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

the photographs, the desperate notes,

peel your own image from the mirror.

Sit. Feast on your life.

Heartbreak is something that everyone has experienced and we felt that this poem along with the style of our project will attract a younger audience of age 15 to 21. This is not just due to the nature of the project but also that stop start motion videos are becoming increasingly popular amongst newer music videos and is also becoming a desired skill.

Along with learning this skill we are going to need the aid of other materials and devices in order to give the project the right level of impact. Our primary concern is deciding what visual images are going to be used to make sense of the poem. We want to mix a selection of literal meaning and also use images to show a hidden meaning that we feel the poem is trying to convey. We decided the best way to do this is to split the poem into two sections and then draft out separate ideas. These ideas we can then join to together to make one full-length project that collaborates both our styles. In these photos we both agreed to use a young male who is going to be the main character through out the film. We decided to use a male as we felt it goes against the typical idea of a heartbroken female. We also thought as the poem is written by a male we will have it narrated by a female.

Our second concern is finding the right way to include the poem into our film. We have decided that narration will be the key part of this but we may include the text of certain words in order to enhance their meaning.

The programs that are going to be key in this project are Photoshop, adobe flash and some audio programs. Photo shop is going to be used to manipulate and adobe flash will be used to animate them for the film. We are going to use some audio programs to record the poem being read and then transferred over to flash to run as a narration from the beginning to the end.

Finally we had to decide on what is going to be realistic within our time scale. The first couple of weeks are going to be based on learning some new skills and playing around with different ideas and choosing locations. The next week will solely be based on gathering all the photographs that are going to be used for making the film and start to get them on the hard drive ready for manipulation.

The rest of the time will be used on editing the photos and animating them on flash, which will happen in and outside of the planned seminars. The last few weeks we plan to have the film skeleton completed but with enough time to add any tweaks and also to gather some feedback from different audiences to gain any criticism that can be written up in the final evaluation.

Photo shop continued

another reason we needed photoshop was to turn some of our pictures black and white for single frame inserts. by doing this the black and white of the image represents old memories.

Skills learnt in Photoshop

Because of the nature of producing a stop motion piece, it means managing a huge number of photos, through this we have learnt a lot of tricks on photoshop to make it easier.

for example we wanted to resize all our photos, and by using actions we could resize them all automatically.

This is some simple use of creating a movie file of a bouncing ball. i had to use layers and convert the shape into a symbol.

Montage

this image used a montage of other images mainly using the different selection tools and copy, pasting and moving tools.

This picture is made of different layers, each individual picture is a layer, switching between layers means you can work on different parts of the picture.

The magic wand tool was the most used tool during selection.

Andy warhol Inspired work

Todays workshop used inspiration from Andy Warhols Pop art and by using copy and pasting commands and also using selection and inverse selection i was able to create a couple of images in this style.

i learnt different commands on the kay boards
CMD A - select all
CMD C- copy
CMD N - new canvas
CMD V - Paste

Also by using the bucket tool i was able to change the background colours in one click.
